We are excited to announce two open positions at the University of Iowa's Department of Classics: a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Egyptology and an Assistant Professor of Instruction position in Latin and Roman Civilization. Our faculty covers a diverse array of specialties in Classics from ancient literature, ancient religion, and biblical studies to museum studies and the digital humanities. We are united under the common goal of deepening and expanding our understanding of the ancient world as a whole.
Assistant Professor of Egyptology
The Department of Classics at The University of Iowa invites applications to apply for an Assistant Professor position in Egyptology to begin in August 2026.
The field of specialization is open to all periods and specialties in ancient Egypt, but the successful candidate will have research and/or teaching interests that extend through the Greco-Roman period, complementing the research areas of our existing graduate faculty.
The teaching load is two courses per semester, with at least one course each year being a large introductory lecture course on ancient Egypt.
Knowledge of and experience in digital humanities, as well as experience curating or overseeing museum collections and/or teaching museum studies courses are desirable. The department welcomes candidates whose research and teaching are interdisciplinary in nature and intersect with other research areas, including ancient religion, archaeology, language, and literature.

Education Requirement:
- PhD in Egyptology, Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, Classics, History, Archaeology, or related field at time of appointment.
Required Qualifications:
- Primary research profile in Egyptology.
- Two years of teaching experience.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience teaching courses in Egyptology.
- Experience teaching large lecture courses.
- Research interest in Ptolemaic Egyptology.
- Knowledge of and experience in Digital Humanities.
- Experience curating and overseeing museum collections or experience teaching Museum Studies courses.
Assistant Professor of Instruction in Latin and Roman Civilization
The Department of Classics at The University of Iowa invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Instruction in Latin language and literature and Roman civilization/history to begin Fall 2026. This is a non-tenure track position. The teaching load is four courses per academic semester.
We are seeking a candidate with proven pedagogical skills in Latin language instruction and experience teaching hybrid online courses. Our first- and second-year Latin courses meet 3 days each week with a 4th hour (asynchronous) online component each week.
The successful candidate will teach courses in Latin language and literature and courses such as Roman Civilization, Love and Glory: Literature of Rome, and courses in Roman history and culture.
